Java Language Change Ideas

During Javapolis, a number of whiteboards will be reserved for generating ideas for small changes to the Java programming language. Examples might include avoiding NullPointerException or accessing the index from the new foreach loop.

The concept is that anyone should be able to write up their idea for a small syntax change in the language. Everyone else will then be able to write up their views and opinions on the proposed ideas.

The intention is to generate positive feedback on new ideas, and to try and determine which are the most popular changes, and which areas of Java currently cause the most pain.

There are key participants from the Java community present at Javapolis, including Neal Gafter. With a good debate, and good ideas, we stand a chance of influencing the language from the 'bottom up' instead of the normal 'top down' approach.

Rules

  • 'small' changes only - closures are excluded as they are a Javapolis topic anyway
  • focus on language/syntax, not on libraries/APIs
  • ideas should be in the spirit of the Java language
  • ideas should be backwards compatible
  • no language wars!

Date and Time

Throughout the week at the whiteboards. At least 2 of the 8 whiteboards will be reserved for this!

Host

Contact me if you want to help host this. However, most of the time I expect the whiteboards to be unmanned and to manage themselves.
